VOLUME II OF VIVALDI’S BASSOON CONCERTOS
Sophie Dervaux: French bassoonist and member of the Vienna Philharmonic. Her entire life has been shaped by music. Since her childhood, she has been particularly drawn to Baroque music. What started as a modest idea to record an album of Baroque concertos developed into an ambitious project: the recording of all of Antonio Vivaldi’s bassoon concertos. On March 14, 2025, the second of six albums will be released on Berlin Classics. Vivaldi’s musical output reflects an incredible intellectual energy and inspiration. His works, including a considerable number of instrumental concertos, are impressive both in terms of quantity and quality. Despite Igor Stravinsky’s dismissive remark about Vivaldi’s repetitive compositional style, other composers like Johann Sebastian Bach have shown great respect for the Venetian master. Particularly remarkable are Vivaldi’s bassoon concertos, of which he left an astounding 39. These make him a pioneer, establishing the bassoon as a solo instrument. Today, many bassoonists consider Vivaldi one of their most important composers, not only because of his pioneering work but also due to the quality and originality of his music. This recording includes seven of his bassoon concertos: RV 488, RV 502, RV 500, RV 493, RV 477, RV 485, and RV 498.
