World debut: Berlin Classics presents first solo recording of Iveta Apkalna from the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg
Berlin Classics welcomes Iveta Apkalna to the team and presents the world premiere recording of Iveta Apkalna's solo program at the Elbphilharmonie organ! The Latvian organist is considered one of the world's leading instrumentalists. As the titular organist of the new Klais organ in the great hall of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, she knows the instrument better than almost any other artist. Now on her new album "Light & Dark" she dedicates herself exclusively to this spectacular instrument.
At the centre is the title-giving work Hell and Dunkel by the Russian-born composer Sofia Gubaidulina, who lives near Hamburg. A wide sound panorama - shimmering figurations in highest tones and deep static, dark cluster clouds - shows the wide tonal range of the instrument. The album also contains works by other composers: Leos Janáček and his post studies from the Glagolitic Mass, the three Évocations by Apkalna's French organist colleague Thierry Escaich, the two Etudes for Organ by György Ligeti, the Passacaglia of the opera Lady Macbeth by Mzensk by Dmitri Shostakovich and two works by her compatriots Aivars Kalējs and Lūcija Garūta.
The album will be available in stores from September 7, 2018.
